History of Mayfair

The term 'Mayfair' derives from an annual fair held in what is now Shepherd Market. Lasting two weeks from May 1st, this event initially transformed the Mayfair fields into a bustling marketplace for livestock and evolved to include theatres, jugglers, gambling, and food stalls.

Mary Davies, heiress to a wealthy banking family, inherited the marshy meadows south of Oxford Street and east of Park Lane. Her marriage into the Grosvenor family, followed by the efforts of her son, Sir Richard Grosvenor, led to the development of the upscale Grosvenor Square. This, along with investments from other affluent individuals in the vicinity, laid the foundation for modern-day Mayfair.

During World War II, three-quarters of Mayfair's grand houses were repurposed as offices, inadvertently safeguarding them from destruction. However, in the post-war period, as London returned to normalcy, many of these buildings have been gradually restored to residential use, with investors seeking planning permissions to increase Mayfair's residential population.

Over four centuries ago, the Blue Plaques that now adorn Mayfair's walls were nonexistent. The area was once marshland and farmland, hosting an annual farm fair in May. Today, Mayfair is synonymous with celebrities, aristocrats, and politicians. Perhaps the most famous former resident of Mayfair is Queen Elizabeth II.

The area continues to be a magnet for musicians, celebrities, and models who appreciate its exclusive allure.
